Understanding Anime..... The Beginnings

The field of televised Japanese animation, popularly known as “anime” (pronounced ah-nee-may, a word derived from the French term for animation), has always led a curious double life. While anime is often considered to be the quintessential expression of Japanese culture, its greatest documents are scandalously un-Japanese. Unlike the Japanese manga or comic strip, which is rooted in Japan’s centuries-old traditions of woodcut carvings and graphic prints, anime is the purest product of the multinational era.

Spawned in the 1960s by Japan’s postwar media boom, anime quickly became one of the most innovative sites of the multinational video culture. Early anime series such as Osamu Tezuka’s Tetsuwan Atomu [Astro Boy] (1963) derived much of their visual inspiration from the classic Disney and Warner Brothers cartoons, while scriptwriters drew deeply from the well of Western European and US science fiction narratives. By the early 1970s, anime had begun to develop its own unique array of forms, ranging from the teenage martial arts comedy to the human-piloted robot adventure or “mecha” tale. By the mid-1980s, anime had transformed a complex blend of Japan’s indigenous manga culture, US science-fiction and animation, European scriptwriting and theater, and the editing techniques of the Hong Kong martial arts films into a whole new art-form. Today, the anime culture has become one of the heavyweights of the global media industry.1

Posh Shop Game

Let's Go Shopping!

Imagine if you could take one of your greatest passions -- shopping for designer clothes -- and turn it into a money-making career. That is exactly what's going on inside Posh Shop, a fantastic entrepreneur simulation game that lets you take the reign of a burgeoning fashion empire! Judy is tired of working in retail for someone else, so she has taken it upon herself to open a clothing store of her own. But this isn't just any old store: this is high fashion of the highest degree, outselling the Christian Diors, Donna Karans, and Vera Wangs of the world!

The goal in this game is to start with a single store selling one particular type of clothing, but very soon you will be attracting the attention of the world's biggest buyers. They'll come flocking to your outlet to pick up several outfits and it is up to you sell your fantastically original collection. Want in on the fashion world and want to make a heck of a lot of money doing what you love? Then Posh Shop is right up your alley.

An Outfit For Every Occasion

The customers that walk through your door don't want single articles of clothing. They're not satisfied with just a shirt or a simple skirt. No, what they demand from you are fantastically coordinated outfits that have designed from the ground up. Your task is to collect clothes that match with one another -- they'll mostly color-coded -- piecing together looks that are absolutely fabulous. Increase your efficiency by pairing single items with multiple ones, creating several outfits at the same time. You'll have to achieve a certain sales goal at the end of the day and this strategy can help expedite the process considerably.

Each shirt, skirt, blouse, and pair of pants will slowly make its way down the display line, so you'll have to nab them before they reach the end of the line. Should they fall through, you'll have to suffer a restocking fee, taking away from your bottom line (and you don't want that). When you create sets of three or more outfits, you are also treated to bonus bags of money. Click on them repeatedly to grab that cash!

More Selection Means More Money

In between stages, you'll have the opportunity to purchase additional outfits. Choose the ones that will rake in the most dough. In the beginning, outfits will consist of only two pieces of clothing -- a top and a bottom -- but the more lucrative outfits will consist of three, four, or even five pieces. It's all about having a complete look!

It's also important to dress up your store's appearance! Additional furnishings can help your business in many ways. Certain pieces of furniture will add to the price of each outfit sold, whereas other upgrades will pause time, pull the clothing line back, and do all sorts of other fun things.

More Than Just a Trend

The growth of your business is out of control! Each week, you'll open up a new store with a whole new clothing collection. Will it be denim? Sportswear? Business attire? Make money selling clothes of all kinds, enjoying fun mini-games in between. These side attractions help break up the action and provide some variety.

All the fashionistas in the audience should take note! This is one game you're not going to want to miss!
